The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Check out this book (and movie). It's highly suspenseful with a cumbersome plot packed with surprises. This is the first of Stieg Larsson's murder mystery trilogy, followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire. Book number one centers on a journalist hired to investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vangar, a descendant of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden. The investigation uncovers a line of injustice in the Vangar family and fraudulence in highest tiers of Swedish industrialism. http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Dragon-Tattoo-Vintage/dp/0307454541/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274457438&sr=1-1

Sh*t My Dad Says

heck out this funny new book called Sh*t My Dad Says. I have never laughed harder in my life. It's written by a dude named Justin Halpern, who moved back home at the age of 28 after having been dumped by his girlfriend. He decided to record all of the hilarious things his 73-year-old father said to him and compile them into this awesome book. Also, follow Justin Halpern on twitter! http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Sh-t-My-Dad-Says/Justin-Halpern/e/9780062002945/?itm=6&USRI=chelsea+handler

Secret Cities

Really cool article in Obscure sound on a band called Secret Cities. Hailing from "cassette tape mentality" (as in two teenagers sharing mix tapes after having met at band camp), this duo shares characteristics with Marissa Nadler, Devendra Banhart, and Victoria Legrand. Secret Cities is rife with unique textures (both acoustic and digital), hand-clapped percussion, and soaring guitar solos... http://obscuresound.com/?p=4383

Juliet, Naked

This seems like a really interesting book. It's about musician Tucker Crowe who was once famous but disappears from the public eye, and the fans who create a mythology around his music and his renown. One of Crowe's die-hard fans, Duncan, breaks up with his girlfriend when she fails to see the genius behind one of Crowe's albums, Juliet. After the couple breaks up, Duncan's girlfriend shortly develops a connection to Tucker Crowe, first casually through email, then on more of a personal level. Hornby underscores the characters' delusions about their own identities, while portraying them in a sympathetic light. Synecdoche

If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out. Caden Cotard is burdened by neuroses, self-doubt, and various physical ailments. Upon receiving a MacArthur grant, he decides to write and produce a play based on his own life. He builds a giant set in a warehouse in New York, and casts friends to portray the people in his life. After a while, the rehearsals get so long and drawn out that it's unclear if the play will ever come to fruition. This is the directorial debut of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. http://video.barnesandnoble.com/DVD/Synecdoche-New-York/Philip-Seymour-Hoffman/e/43396289963/?itm=1&USRI=synecdoche+new+york

Lullaby

Ever read the book Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk? It's about a reporter researching a series of sudden unexplained infant deaths. In so doing, he discovers a poem in a children's Anthology that kills the listener whenever recited. In an attempt to destroy every copy of the book, the reporter finds himself tempted to use its supernatural powers to kill people who annoy him. Laced in more of a unique plot line than his previous endeavors, Palahniuk touches on themes such as consumerism, identity, free will, and sensory overload.
