Invisible Monsters

This is one of Chuck Palahniuk's best novels to date (even though it came out eleven years ago.) Comically dark, wryly witty, and seriously sardonic, it centers around a former beauty queen who had it all- a boyfriend, a career, and a best friend- that is until a car accident permanently scars her face. A newly 'invisible monster', hardly anyone realizes she exists. She goes on adventures and searches her soul to realize that she may have to lose everything to start her life anew. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Invisible-Monsters/Chuck-Palahniuk/e/9780393319293/?itm=1&USRI=invisible+monsters

Before the Music Dies

Check out this documentary on youtube. It's about the superficiality of today's music world compared to the scene 40 or 50 years ago, when depth and creativity were much more cherished. It goes behind the scenes and shows footage of big-name musicians in history, charting the evolution of the industry. Director Andrew Shapter includes commentary from record execs, journalists, and artists such as Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Erykah Badu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPZztrRWjZ8

How I Became Stupid

Check out the book How I became Stupid by Martin Page. It's about a 25-year-old scholar named Antoine who decides that intelligence is the reason for his emotional anguish. He decides to dumb himself down first by becoming an alcoholic, then by trying to commit suicide. Antoine's story unfolds in this "modern day version of Candide", and we see his reasoning behind the idea that ignorance is bliss. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/How-I-Became-Stupid/Martin-Page/e/9780142004951/?itm=1&USRI=how+i+became+stupid

Green Wing

Check out the British comedy Green Wing- it's hilarious! Created by Victoria Pile, it's about a group of doctors working in fictional East Hampton Hospital. Even though it's set in a hospital, there are no medical story lines- it's all character-driven. Pile describes the show as "a sketch-meets-comedy-drama-meets-soap". Hard Day's Write

Check out this book by Steve Turner- it's an account of private occurrences that influenced the Beatles' writing. While Turner sheds light on some of the myths associated with famous Beatles' songs, he depicts the every day people and events that hold a special place in their music.
