The Wanting Seed

Set in the near future, The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess is a Malthusian/dystopian comedy about what the world is like when it's severely overpopulated. The two main characters, Tristram and Beatrice-Joanna, live in cramped conditions and are forced to re-use materials. Heterosexuality is frowned upon in this society, as homosexual relationships assure against procreation. Burgess examines the effect overpopulation has on religion, society, and government in this fascinating novel. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Wanting-Seed/Anthony-Burgess/e/9780393315080/?itm=1&USRI=the+wanting+seed

This is a really cool book. Danial Levitin, a neuroscientist at McGill University, writes about the cognitive process of listening to music. Layperson and expert-friendly, Levitin defines terms for those who are not familiar with them, but also goes into pretty elaborate detail in his explanation of why we create music, and what goes on in our heads when we listen to and enjoy it. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/This-Is-Your-Brain-on-Music/Daniel-J-Levitin/e/9780452288522/?itm=1&USRI=this+is+your+brain+on+music

Alice in Wonderland

Excited for Alice in Wonderland?? Been a long time since the first preview, but it's finally here! Latest trailers look completely awesome! Granted, it's a Tim Burton remake of classic literature, and it's easy to recognize that Burton stamp in a film, but I have high hopes for this one. (PS, why does Johnny Depp get to play the most bad-ass characters in every film he does??)

One Flew Over

Take a look at One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey.  It centers on a group of mental ward patients- their interactions and struggles.  Seen through the eyes of Chief Bromden, a taciturn half-Indian patient, Kesey's novel is essentially about the battle between good and evil, the fight between sanity and insanity.  If you're into books like A Clockwork Orange or Slaughter-House Five, you should definitely check this one out. amazon
